This is Gibson Les Paul Melody Maker. It has a P90 pickup. I added a pickguard as it looked kind of naked without it. I added a Roland GK3 Pickup in order to use it with a guitar synth. I do not use much the sound of the guitar synth, though. I use it mostly as a midi controller. That is, I use the guitar to control the soft-synths in my computer…basically I use it as a big computer mouse. Also used to have a B-Bender on the guitar. Awesome for the country licks.

Song recorded in my home studio in the east village. Guitar chords are played on a Fender Stratocaster. There is a lapsteel guitar solo in the middle of the song. It was played on a Gibson Br6. The rest of the song are samples and soft-synths. A lot of “metal” samples, hence the name of the song.

This is a made in Mexico Telecaster, in particular a “Power Telecaster.” It has a so called “Fishman Power bridge,” or a piezo pickup in the bridge. This can make the guitar sound like an acoustic guitar or like an electric (or a blend of both), hence it is very versatile. It also has a middle pick up, which brings it closer to a Stratocaster that Telecaster purists would like.

Here is another of the first songs that I recorded in my home studio. The voice sample come from the movie “2001: A Space Odyssey”. From the computer “HAL” in particular. I like the riff and I think that the improvised solo at the middle is pretty cool. It sounds like I am using a “wah” pedal. Actually I am using a “phaser” pedal.

This is a Gibson Les Paul, chambered, and with P90s. I bought it online. When I received I did not like it at all. It was too damn light. It felt like a toy. Little by little I started to like it. It was an acquired taste. It really rocks and records very nicely. I do not like it very much for clean passages. On the other hand, it excels in distorted tones. Now I really like it, and I really appreciate the fact that it is a very light instrument (by far my lightest electric).

I recorded this song many years ago. The vocals were written and performed by a friend. It was one of the first songs that I recorded in my home studio. It has a nice rock feeling, I think. It even has a neat (if I can say it so myself) guitar solo. I used a Fender Stratocaster, a Fender Bass, and a Vox amplifier for the guitars. No effects, just the amp distortion. I used a cheap-ish Oktava mic for the recording (my first condenser mic). Even now, I sometimes still turn back to the old Oktava.

This is an American Deluxe Fender Stratocaster. This is the first decent guitar that I bought in NYC. The color (candy tangerine) was a little hard to get in those days. Went to a store called the Music Zoo, which is one of the best in the NYC area (great stock). Most of my earlier songs are recorded with this guitar. Very comfortable and with very modern features.

My favorite bass combo amp. Small and light, so perfect for people with space problems (like New Yorkers) and very easy to transport. It is also pretty powerful and can be connected to an extension cab. It is a very clean solid state amp with many controls for eq. so you can get almost any sound you long for (except distorted tones). This amp is made in Italy.

Song: Evolución (with Sax)

This is the same song as below but with saxophone. The story of the song is that the brother of a friend came to visit him on NYC. It turns out that he is one of the greatest sax players in Mexico (and I would say elsewhere). We decided to record with him something. My friend (a sound engineer) put my song “Evolución” and started to record. The sax player had never heard the song. He just started improvising (that is why at the beginning of the song he is not playing, he was just listening and trying to determine the key of the song). So what you hear here is just the first take (!). All improvisation. No mistakes. No need to edit anything. Just perfect. It is an awesome song. We just need to mix it with a little reverb and it will be just a delicious song.

Enjoy this great musician.
